Currently, there are approximately 185 000 Ukrainian pupils in Polish schools (of which approximately 135 000 are refugees and war refugees). Already, around 75% of male and female teachers teach at least one child of Ukrainian origin. Therefore, the Center for Citizenship Education is launching projects that will provide them with comprehensive support in introducing educational integration.
„Improving teachers’ competences in working with students with migrant experience (…)” is one of the basic directions for the implementation of educational policy in Poland in the school year 2023/2024. The aim of our projects is to support schools in adapting to the needs of both Polish and Ukrainian pupils and students. Through educational integration, it is possible to create conditions at school that are conducive to the educational success of all students, regardless of their nationality and diverse needs.
This year, we plan to reach 28 schools with educational integration support programmes and conduct training and events for 2,695 teachers. Our activities will focus on three key areas:
responding to emotional needs, especially through activities aimed to preparing teachers to teach students stress management techniques;
responding to learning needs, especially through promoting teaching and assessment methods which are relevant to more diverse classrooms and the practice of simplifying the language of instruction;
responding to social needs, especially in terms of preventing intercultural tensions and responding to intercultural conflicts that may arise in school communities.

Better Learning Programme
A partner in the projects „O redukcji stresu” („On stress reduction”), „Redukcja stresu dla lepszego uczenia się” („Stress reduction for better learning”), and „O redukcji stresu: procesowe wsparcie szkół” („On stress reduction: process support for schools”) is the Norwegian humanitarian organisation for the protection of the rights of people affected by displacement Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
NRC, in collaboration with the Department of Education at the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway, has developed the Better Learning Programme (BLP) that we use in our projects. It is a working model aimed at recovering the lost learning capacity of students exposed to the stress related to crisis and conflict. The programme is implemented by the NRC in a number of countries and is based on best practices in psychosocial support for education in times of crisis.
As a partner in the educational integration support project, the NRC will be responsible for, among other things, the preparation and adaptation of textbooks for the BLP method, the development and translation of supportive educational materials and videos, the organisation of training and expert visits for BLP trainers/trainers and school staff involved in the project, and the development of a system to monitor the effects of BLP among members of the school community. In addition, a study of the impact of the BLP on stress reduction among children and the distribution of a set of BLP guidelines to school principals, teachers, policy makers and donors is planned.
